2.0.30 fatal signal 11

I am using RedHat 4.1 and from a fresh install it doesn't support my
digiboard via a loadable module.. it also doesn't come with source for the
kernel...

So off I go to ftp.kernel.org and download 2.0.30 source tree, do the
necessary linking per the README that it comes with. cd to /usr/src/linux
and do make config, then make dep, ok no problem so far... then when I do
a make zImage... I get a killed by Fatal Signal 11 and it stops the
compiling of the kernel. I have gcc Version 2.7.2, which is standard on
RedHat 4.1, anyone know what FatalSignal 11 is and how I can get around
it?
