really sure method of triggering that: (2.1.39)
go to VT;
cat linux-2.1.36.tar.gz # yes, I really mean that!
start pressing CapsLock fast
the effect should be visible in a few seconds.

After repeating that Alt-Fn stopped working.

I could not trigger the freeze while running non-SMP kernel.
