Perhaps it is fixed in either bash-2, or something in glibc handles
signals differently, that would be nice to know. redhat-4.1 has
bash-1.14.7 and libc-5.3.12, so that's what I am testing with (but I've
also tested against libc-5.4.17).

Possibly related is that I'm running this inside screen running in an
xterm.
