It sure isn't limited to linux. I've seen this problem hit NT as well. The actual culprit is the SCSI SCAM Plug-n-Pray crap in the BIOS. I've seen controllers give this problem if you disabled this option, and others that have to have it enabled to avoid the problem. Whichever yours is, the answer is usually to flip this setting from what it currently is to the other side and things go ahead and work then.
