kernel hngs in pre-patch-2.1.37-7

The kernel hangs on my machine during boot while (I think) trying to boot
the non-existent second processor. This is compiled with SMP=1 on and
running without SMP disabled as a lilo option. It reports:

.....APIC Bus clock speed is 0.00000 MHz
Booting processor 1 eipc 2000

The motherboard is a tyan tomcat III with only one processor installed. It
boots fine under non smp 2.1.36 and NT 4.0.

I am going to try mucking about with defining SMP_DEBUG and seeing what
happens.
