It is very kool, but I've done some driver work on slowaris, and their
implementation of this is extremely fragile. There are some files in the
root file system that the kernel uses to handle this, and if by a crash
those files get corrupted, your system will never bee the same.

The real win of this mechinism, though, is that the driver creates
device node by name, is the /devices filesystem, so major device number
allocation ceasing being an issue. In theory.
