I purchased a Quantum bigfoot 6GB ide disk drive. I fdisked it to one
partition equal to the disk size. Fdisk claims the drive has 15 heads,
63 sectors and 13446 cylinders which I believe is correct. When I try
to make a file system on the drive, the following error occurs-
mkfs.ext2 /dev/hdc1
writing inode tables .... (numbers run past for awhile), then
irq timeout: status=0xb5 {busy}
hdc: reset timed out, status=0xb5
bdc: drive not ready for command
The only option at this point is the power switch.
To test the hardware, I formattted the drive to NTFS under NT on the
same system. This proceeded without any problems, so I thought the
problem might be with the linux driver. If not, please let me know.
On boot the system prints out -
PIIX3: bus master IDE device on PCI bus 0 function 57
ide1: BM_DMA @ 0xf008 - 0xf00f
ide1: master/slave: sample_CLKs=3, recovery_CLKS=1
master: fastDMA=yes PreFetch=on IORDY=on fastPIO=on
hdc: dma disabled
hdc: Quantum Bigfoot_CY6480A, 6204mB w/17152 KB Cache, LBA,
CHS=13446/15/63
I have tried using kernel versions 2.1.13 and 2.1.36 with the same
results.
Thanks for your help.
