Why I can not login?

Hello linux experts,

Sorry if I bother you with a so simple question. But I have
posted this question at "setup" group for days and haven't
gotten an answer. Could someone tell me why I can not login
my system (no passwd prompt). All I did was upgrade the
kernel from 2.0.7 to 2.0.29, the same .config file works on
a twin machine.
