The second time I didn't apply the patch so I don't think that was the
case. It looks to me like the 2.1.36 has either 1.18e or 1.18f,

#define SCSI_NCR_DRIVER_NAME "ncr53c8xx - revision 1.18f"
(in ncr53c8xx.h),
** 16 April 1997, version 1.18e
(in ncr53c8xx.c),

I saw the second one first so I assumed it was 1.18e, that's why I tried
the e->f patch and hit n to apply -R, so it shouldn't have made any
difference. The second time (actually third, but I'm not counting), I
started with a fresh 2.1.36 and only applied the root inode patch as
mentioned earlier.
