I have a server with 16megs of RAM running very light shell/FTP/web serving as well as running INN on a busy 28K8 news feed. On kernels 2.1.3x it would randomly crash when under load (attempting to install the Debian package for gcc was guaranteed to crash it). In the case of a crash it would simply lockup with no messages displayed. I have stopped the problem from recurring by putting the following in a startup script:

echo "64 96 128" > /proc/sys/vm/freepages

I have noticed this problem reported on 2.0.x, just letting you all know that it's there on 2.1.x as well. If anyone wants details of the hardware/software setup then just ask.
