i am on a new Ppro, freshly installed with a slackware distrib, i did
upgrade the gcc (, and libc) now when i compile a kernel i get:

ld -m elf_i386 -Ttext 0xC0100000 -e stext arch/i386/kernel/head.o init/main.o init/version.o \
arch/i386/kernel/kernel.o arch/i386/mm/mm.o kernel/kernel.o mm/mm.o fs/fs.o ipc/ipc.o \
fs/filesystems.a \
net/network.a \
drivers/block/block.a drivers/char/char.a drivers/net/net.a drivers/scsi/scsi.a drivers/cdrom/cdrom.a drivers/pci/pci.a \
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib/lib.a /usr/src/linux/lib/lib.a /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib/lib.a \
-o vmlinux
fs/filesystems.a(autofs.o): In function `init_autofs_fs':
autofs.o(.text+0x2a2): undefined reference to `register_filesystem_R9ffa3c25'

so what's going wrong here?
i installed the modutils:modutils-970320
