Zombies Have Taken Over...

I've got 79 sendmail zombies in my process table this morning. I
can't kill them (that's probably redundant), and I don't know what
caused them.

Kernel pre-2.0.30, fresh Debian 1.2 "stable" setup, full-time ppp
connection to the Internet, which appears to be working fine. Mail
goes in and out.

What can I try? Why are they there?

Thanks in advance,

ObSilliness: Maybe they crawled out of Quake

Perhaps related: We don't recieve email properly from a site that's running Microsoft Exchange Server Internet Mail Connector Version 4.0.994.63. The connection hangs halfway through. There are too many zombies for our traffic from that site to account for them, and email from them doesn't create zombies anyway, but there's possibly something awry with our networking. We had no problems a week ago when I was running a stale Slackware 3.0 setup.
