No IDE doesnt permit a host system to damage the disk. The bang bang sounds
like the unit is dead.

I've lost a WD caviar 1.6Gb, I know tons of folk who have. Maybe they sold
a lot, maybe they are dodgy I don't know. I've got a nice Fujitsu instead.
