There does seem to be a problem: "make oldconfig" doesn't create
include/linux/version.h, whereas "make menuconfig" makes a correct one:

/usr/src/linux# cat ./include/linux/version.h
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.0.29"
#define LINUX_VERSION_CODE 131101
