Exactly because not everyone has Expect or Lynx installed. NCFTP does
this, but it requires installation for proper functionality, and is big
(156k+). Surely it wouldn't be difficult to hack the existing ftp client
to provide this function, and this function only.
Using ncftp, try
ncpftp sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/kernel/v2.0/Logo.gif
