2.0.24 is working here (compiled in ELF), but If I try to compile it as
a.out, ld complains about not being able to find the _start symbol
and the whole linking process goes wrong. Is that the way it's supposed
to be?

ld version 2.7 (with BFD 2.7.0.3)
gcc version 2.7.2
