There is a real need for you to use a program called "screen". ;-)

It does exactly what you want - and much more...

IMHO, there is no need to put even more features into the kernel console.
The thing is big enough already (admittedly, most of these are features
which you can't do well in a user-mode program).

In fact, I'd like an option to modularize all of /dev/tty#. Not every
Linux box has a CRT display.
