Why not just look in the win95 registry, or win31 ini files etc, if
they're available? Then just say something like "Detected hardware
settings from operating system #####. Use these settings for kernel?".
Then, if you can't find them, then worry about ports and so on. After
all, for most people, Linux is not the first OS they have: they upgrade
from other systems.
