cdrom question

I have a really stupid question. I am still running linux 1.3.25 kernel (slowl
y upgrading, good learning experience you know)
and I noticed that when I don't have a cd in my cdrom, I am unable to mount it
later. Why is this, and is it fixed in a later
release? The cdrom is at /dev/hdd. When I try to issue mount -t iso9660 -o ro
/dev/hdd /cdrom. I get the following in
my messages file:

Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: hdd: drive not ready for command
Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: hdd: ATAPI reset complete
Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: hdd: status error: status=0x00
Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 1640, sector 64
Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: hdd: drive not ready for command
Aug 21 19:09:25 north kernel: isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev 0x1640 iso_blk
num 16

Yet, when I reboot with a cd in, it works fine.

Any thoughts or solutions? Could you respond to wolrfunr@os2bbs.com? I try to
keep up on the kernel list, but don't often
get a chance to. <sigh>
