I'm running Linux 1.3.81 and XF86_S3/3.1.2D on a NEC P120 -- it uses the Intel
Triton chipset, and has S3 and sound chips integrated on the motherboard. The
machine originally came with a Conner CFS1275A hard disk and TOSHIBA XM-5302TA
cdrom, configured as the primary and secondary IDE devices.
I've been running with Triton chipset DMA support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_TRITON)
enabled and have had no problems at all. However, I recently got a second IDE
disk, a Western Digital WDC AC21000H, and now get hard crashes on the Western
Digital -- corrupted superblock, sometimes unrecoverable -- no matter how I
configure the IDE devices as master and slave. These hard crashes only seem to
occur with Triton chipset DMA support enabled and the S3 X11 server running;
for the time being I've just turned off the DMA support.
My personal machine at home also runs 1.3.81 and XF86_S3/3.1.2D, and I have no
problems there with Triton chipset DMA support enabled. I also have two hard
disks and a cdrom at home, but have all configured as IDE masters (using the
tertiary IDE interface on my SoundBlaster card). Another difference is that
the S3 chip on my personal machine is on a Diamond card, instead of being on
the motherboard.
