Built from a fresh .86 tree patched to .87 and then .88, I'm unable to
log in at all (as root or anything else) with .87. With .88, I can log
in as root on VC1 but no non-superuser username works. I also tried
telnet-ing to myself and was unable to log in. .85, however, doesn't
have this problem.
Try .89. I had similar problems with .87 and .88.
