Yes, very likely -- the 34 Mbps link between NORDUnet, and
Pensauken, NJ (USA) (SPRINTLINK's ICP cable) has had some router
malfunctions recently. They usually get fixed within 12 hours,
but once we get the eventual deep-sea shark bites at the fiber
cable, or deep-sea land-slides stretch that incredibly strong
cable a bit too much, it will take a couple of weeks before full
service is restored.. On average such occurs about once a year,
but last summer we had three natural disasters there..

.. and once the link is broken, it rather effectively cuts off
NORDUnet networks (where FUNET is one branch) from the USA nets.
There are backups, however you can't put mississippi into a
garden hose..

To tolerate the pressure, such machine must be either very fast
and well connected (T3), or at least with a reasonably speedy
link (T1) and devoid of any other interesting materials.
( ftp.funet.fi handles on weekdays about 20 GB FTP transmissions
a day without any trouble, but it belongs to the "big" category
anyway.. Weekends are quiet, mere 10-14 GB per day. )
