Linux-1.3.88 & smc-ultra Driver as Module

FWIW,

I am unable to use the smc-ultra driver as a module. It works fine
when compiled in the kernel, but I get "Modules from Linux 1.3.88 do
not match 1.3.88" type messages, and the module won't load.

This doesn't happen with any other module I tried, and I use quite a
few. I am using modules from Mar 28 20:33 modules-1.3.69f.tar.gz.

Any suggestions?
