Problem with booting 1.3.85

I just compiled 1.3.85 the other night. Compilation
went fine. However, mid-way through the booting process,
while executing rc.M, I got the a zillion copies of the
following message:

INIT: error read initrequest

After a while I had to hit the big switch. Of course
1.2.13 and 1.3.75 boot fine.

This is with gcc-2.7.2, binutils-2.6.0.12, libc.5.3.9
and sysvinit 2.58.

All hints are welcome.
