Slip/PPP (or lack there of)

I have compiled versions of 1.3.7 up to 1.3.85 and I still have a problem
where there is no slip or ppp active within the system. I will run pppd and
it will report SORRY ppp is no available on this system....

I do a cat /proc/net/dev and I get no active slip or ppp all I do get is my
lo and my ether card....

I have done everything from taking any kind of network drivers out but those
necesarry to get ppp to run... and slip (even the ether card) (each in there
own kernel)

Still no luck and the way my system is built the newest kerenels are the
only thing I can run to use LINUX.

HELP!!!

I hate haveing to get into windows to get on the net...
