For bzImages you need one of the newer loaders, in your case, get
ftp://lrcftp.epfl.ch/pub/people/almesber/lilo/lilo.18dev3.tar.gz
Here a summary of loaders which currently support loading of bzImages:
loader-type product
0 LILO-1.8dev3
1 LOADLIN-1.6pre11
2 dd'ed floppy boot
3 SYSLX (Peter Anvin knows which version)
4 mknbi created bootimages (such as etherboot-1.2)
Sorry, for the 3,4 types I don't know the exact version, but I know
they were updated.
