Just a bit more...I also get fast PPP. On a 28.8 connection, I
routinely get 2.0~3.2 KB/sec grabbing .gz files (i. e. I'm squeezing
out every last bit of performance).

That should have read "3.0~3.2"

I can, however, try talking to a Solaris 2.3 ftp server to see if it's
worse there.

I experimented last night with 1.3.83 to a Solaris 2.3 ftp server.
Here's what I got:

* transferring a compressed file: 2.8 KB/sec (the link was NOT
otherwise unloaded). That's close to full bandwidth.

* transferring a text file (patch-1.3.84): 4.2 KB/sec (the link was
otherwise unloaded). I would normally expect a bit more.

* transferring a file full of nulls: 10 KB/sec (actually slightly
more, now that I think of it). That's a bit low. I should get
11.5~12 KB/sec, since that file's perfectly compressible (I
occasionally have in the past).

So my results were slightly mixed, but they don't support a
significant bandwidth problem with ppp. I'm using 2.2.0d, BTW.
