Some strangeness---

Using linux 1.3.64, libc 5.2.18, gcc 2.7.2, binutils 2.6.0.2, I'v been
doing some programming under linux and its breaking...

sleep() doesn't work, it just hangs the program (strace gives output
that looks like it's stuckin a SIGALRM loop)

open() doesn't work, it opens files with permissions shifted (mode 644
gets opened as 322).

Is this a kernel, libc, gcc, or some other problem?
