I've also been having trouble (lockups) almost everytime I do some
tape backups. I have an Adaptec 2940 and Exabyte SCSI backup unit, I've
been keeping up with the most recent kernels but the problem hasn't
improved. The system just tends to get very unstable while its backing up
sometimes, and I get all sorts of SCSI errors will appear on the screen,
then the system locks up cold... I'll try to write them down next time. :>
Maybe there is something wrong with the SCSI tape driver in the kernel?
