Ok, I've nailed it down a bit better.

Whenever diald has run, booting with an emergency disk and forcing a
check on the root filesystem will always give the following result:

# e2fsck -f /dev/hda3
e2fsck 0.5b, 14-Feb-95 for EXT2 FS 0.5a, 95/03/19
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
i_frag for inode 1999 (/tmp/diald-fifo) is 1, should be zero.
Clear i_frag<y>? yes

Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information

/dev/hda3: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
/dev/hda3: 13478/35568 files, 116186/142128 blocks

Any ideas/comments? (except telling me that's a damn small root
filesystem? :-) )
