SCSI Tape and 2940

I have a nice new hp 4mm 4 gig dat drive hooked to a 2940. This is the only
device on the card. When ever I try to write to the tape
(tar cvf /dev/st0 /vmlinuz), the tape whirs, rewinds, etc, the lights blink
and I get 'i/o error writing to /dev/st0'. Anyone have ideas? Is this
a driver problem, os is my drive toast?
