Ping problems

I am using 1.3.72, and still having a number of problems related to NFS.
Perhaps, however, they are related to this (repeatable) problem:

PING ftp.x.org (198.112.44.100): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 198.112.44.100: icmp_seq=0 ttl=236 time=422.1 ms
wrong data byte #9 should be 0x9 but was 0x1
f3 78 44 31 fb d6 5 0 8 1 a b c1 70 83 73 c6 70 2c 64 14 15 16
17 18 19 1a 1b 1c 1d 1e 1f
20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 2a 2b 2c 2d 2e 2f

I am using a 3c509 ethernet if that's relevant.
