I experience the same problem, when trying to log to a named-pipe that
has not yet been connected. This is an excerpt from my
/etc/syslog.conf:

auth,cron,daemon,kern,lpr,mail,syslog,user,uucp.*;news.err |/dev/xconsole

I usually start xconsole as "xconsole -daemon -notify -verbose
- -exitOnFail -file /dev/xconsole"; this logs all important messages to
the xconsole.

Sometimes, though, I have to start without X and in these cases, I
experience delays upon logging in as root.

BTW, I do *not* log to a remote host.
