can't compile anything?

I'm sorry that I don't have very specific messages right now, but I've
been having problems simply compiling any 1.3.x kernel. It seems to make
the vmlinux just fine, but can't get through the compression part of it.
It always stops at something like:

./xtract /usr/src/linux-1.3.64/vmlinux | gzip -9 | piggyback > zImage

(that's fairly close)

and it gives me the error "Non-GCC header in 'system'."
and then dies out.
Am I just missing something simple? I'm running a pentium 90 with 24MB.
