1.3.71: VFS panic; Unable to mount root filesystem

Even after "make clean; make zImage" the kernel dies with VFS panic;
can't mount root filesystem. I had this error before when somehow not
all required modules were recompiled. This time I have no idea.

But: Couldn't some kind soul add a better explanation instead of
"cannot mount". Why did the mount fail? Is the device unknown, or is
the filesystem type unknown, or what? Some better message would be
great for 2.0.

(I'm using ext2, no loadable modules, IDE)
