Well, if using more memory results in faster memory accesses, is
it unnecessary? The alignments result in faster code accesses.
But if you have limited core, perhaps the compact code is more
appropriate.
However, since the 486 compiled kernels will no longer work on
386 machines, I'm assuming the kernel can take advantage of some
of the 486+ enhancements (mostly associated with context
switching I think?) These enhancements may offset even the extra
swapping that will occur.
Does anyone have any info on memory usage of 386 v 486 v pent
compile kernels, for same config?
