I had similar problem at first too ..... propably a HW problem.
I have MG mboar and I fixed the problem chancing bios boot options.
About the gpm ... I had mouse problems also in X, when I chanced the UART
from 16550A 16550 everythin began to work ok.
If you have a MG mboad with the UARTs on board these might help. :)
