69 kills me!!

I patched my kernel to 69, make sure that I had set CONFIG_SERIAL to y
and recompiled and rebooted. Upon reboot, the boot up sequence was fine
till it tried to start gpm

I have
rc.local:# Running gpm
rc.local:echo "Running gpm..."
rc.local:gpm -t ms &

in my rc file and it has worked so far, however it complains /dev/mouse
does not exist and goes into a loop trying to switch between VCs as it
starts X up. Any suggestions?
