Hello,

here is a summary of how to solve my unable-to-reboot problem...

In article <KOPPENAS.96Feb15131251@koppenas.dialup.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de> koppenas@koppenas.dialup.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de (Andreas Koppenhoefer) writes:

I'm having some difficulties with rebooting my linux box. After
invoking 'shutdown -r now' or 'reboot' linux shuts down cleanly, but
just hangs after running rc.0 script. This is true since I've upgraded
from 1.2.13 to 1.3.x. Currently I'm running 1.3.55. After shuting down
nothing works anymore: no console switches and not even Alt-Gr-Scroll
(show_regs call). Using 'shutdown -h' or 'halt' works very well: after
shutdown the message 'The system is halted.' appears.

Shawn Rutledge <ecloud@goodnet.com> gave me some important
informations about his own system which never reboots, too (Thanks!).
He's running an AMD DX3-100 with Award bios. I'm running Award, too.

So I've tried fiddling around with bios setup. After enabling "CPU do
DRAM write buffer" kernel 1.2.13 stopped rebooting. That's it! All
1.3.xx kernels I've used since upgrading from 1.2.13 have "PCI bridge
optimisation (CONFIG_PCI_OPTIMIZE)" compiled in. While booting 1.3.xx
kernel says...
PCI bridge optimization.
Cache L2: Not supported.
CPU-PCI posted write: on.
>> CPU-Memory posted write: off.Changed! Now on.
PCI-Memory posted write: on.
PCI burst: on.

After compiling a new kernel without PCI optimization my linux box now
reboots as expected.

And here's the question: What's causing this? For what reason my ASUS
SP3G motherboard with Award bios is unable to reboot properly while
"CPU-Memory posted write" is turned on? Anything else is working like
a charm.

- - Motherboard bug?
- - Workaround possible by inserting some delays somewhere?

Thanks,
Andreas
