networking

I've been experiencing some VERY weird messages regarding TCP/IP
networking. A friend of mine has been trying to ftp about 50MB of
graphical images from my machine. After an hour or two of transfers the
connection closes (not sure if it's a linux or win95 deal). But the
strange thing is the *TIME* at which entries are logged:

Feb 16 17:38:23 hobbes last message repeated 4 times (nothing related)
Feb 16 23:40:36 hobbes ftpd[613]: FTP session closed
^^^^^^^^
this entry was made at approximately 17:35 or so. Clearly NOT at 23:40.
This has happened several times. I'm using kernel 1.3.64 w/ PPP and
Redhat 2.1.

Any reasons for this? (yes, my system clock does NOT just ahead)

Derek
