That is an interesting idea. It fits with another slight error I have
seen on my system since....well, as long as I have been doing it. If I do
a 'ping -i 120 199.44.34.2 &' the prompt reapears as it should after the
call, but when the first ping message is printed...no prompt. You can
still execute commands, so bash is still parsing input....

This thread started with problems in cating /proc files. Pipes and
redirects have some of the same characteristics as a proc file. I suspect
that these are all related.

I mentioned earlier, a recent problem with Less that was like this. I
suspect that one of the status calls is *broken* WRT EOF.
