This is quite normal for the EtherExpress driver included in the kernel.
It seems to only work "normally" with 486/33 computers and slower.
There's a reason it's called "ALPHA". Take a look at:
http://www.threethirtysix.org/~schuyler/snorgen/

For a couple of alternate drivers which may work for you. Neither of
them help with Linux on my P-90.
