SMC ethernet card (IRQ 10)

problem is with the soundblaster card:
IRQ7, DMA1 & 6, addresses 0x220 and 0x330...
insmod sound seems to work fine. From dmesg:
Sound initialization started
snd2 <SoundBlaster 16 4.13> at 0x220 irq 7 drq 1
snd6 <SoundBlaster 16 4.13> at 0x220 irq 7 drq 6
snd7 <SoundBlaster MPU-401> at 0x330 irq 7 drq 0
Sound initialization complete
However, playing sounds (cat .au > /dev/audio) gives error messages (I/O
error) and sometimes loops back sound from previous attempts at playing
sounds.
Removing the sound module (rmmod sound) gives the following result in
dmesg:
Sound unload started
sound_free_dma: Bad access to DMA channel 1
Sound unload complete
Can anyone suggest anything that I may be doing wrong here? Thanks.
