Here's a me too message: I've got the same problems, but with a twist..
I can't get 3.1.2 XF86_W32 to run at all(1.2.9, 1.3.9, 1.3.20, 1.3.28),
and I get the same vt switching problem with 3.1.1 under 1.3.x

System stats:
Herc. Dynamite Pro VL W32P_rev_c
libc 5.0.9 / 4.7.3
gcc 2.7.0
