I apologize for using this forum for my reply and thanks. Someone pointed
quite correctly out to me that I should have addressed my questions and
complaints to another group. But since I started here let me finish here.
I want to thank all the people who tried to help me. I have learned
quite a few things. I didn't want to offend. It is just frustating
sometimes when you spend a lot of time on something and it does not work
as expected. Someone suggested that the short versions were tar files and
the long versions were tar.gz files. Since I still had the files I tried
that approach. But this time I got the message: this is not a tar file.
In any event I have the 1.3.9 kernel which worked. Concerning a proposal
to download only from bona fide mirrors or the horse's mouth, I have very
often been refused access or been told that the particular mirror at the
moment would not honour requests. Be that as it may, once more my
