Ok, this turned out to be simple once I started looking at it. It looks
something like this (fs/namei.c: get_write_access()):

for (p = &LAST_TASK ; p > &FIRST_TASK ; --p) {
struct vm_area_struct * mpnt;
- if (!*p)
+ if (!*p || !(*p)->mm)

That is, just change the "if (!*p)" test into "if (!*p || !(*p)-mm)".
That should fix it..
