Crashing Problems

I am running kernel 1.3.11, and am having system lockup problems. It
seems to be very repeatable. If I am in X and have a console open, doing
a find command the system locks solid. I was also attempting to do a
backup using backup script (backup-1.03) to tape, and have had a lockup
occur at the same place repeatedly (Seems to be after backup has completed)
Is this possibly pointing towards a bad block on the harddrive? If so,
how could I clean it up without major data loss? I have even tried
shutting off the cache in CMOS setup, with no change. I would appreciate
any help ANYONE could provide. Thanks a lot!
