Just one day and SVGATextMode works again 8-) Thanks!
Sadly, now PPP is broken :-(
I connect OK, ifconfig and route contain the right info, ifconfig shows
that packets are being exchanged, but at the user level no packet is seen
(i.e. ping does not work even for the quad.dot address of my
point-to-point connection). Ethernet works OK.
I am back to 1.3.5 for PPP connection...
