general protection faults with 2.6.26

Hi, I'm running lenny on an K9A2 Platinum 790FX with an Athlon Dual
Core (5050e) and have had several mysterious crashes over the last
several months; the machine would lock up showing a panic message, but
I wasn't able to get ahold of the full set of error messages. Tonight
I happened to be logged in when I got a message on the console about a
general protection fault in the kernel, and was able to grab the error
messages from dmesg. I see several similar "general protection fault"
errors which I hope are the same problem as has been causing the
lockups.

Note that this happened with the BIOS set to automatically scale the
CPU frequency; this post (although with a different motherboard)
suggests that it might be a problem:
