Why is it gone?

mount /dev/md1 /tmpmnt
mount --bind /tmpmnt/var /var
mount --bind /tmpmnt/home /home

Is perfectly fine, and /tmpmnt is still alive and mounted. Additionally,
you can

umount /tmpmnt

now, which leaves only /var and /home.
